Medical Gas Probes – BS 5682, DIN 13260-2 and AFNOR Gas Probes

Tecnomed medical gas probes connect equipment and hoses to terminal units so gas from the central system reaches the patient or the device. Manufactured to BS 5682:1992, DIN 13260 and AFNOR NF S 90-116, they are made of chrome-plated brass, produced specifically for O2, N2O, medical air 4 and 7 bar and CO2, and labelled per gas.

Overview

A medical gas probe is the mechanical key that takes gas out of a terminal unit. It is pushed into the outlet, locks in place and delivers the gas to a hose or directly to a device union. Because each gas has its own probe geometry, the probe is the physical barrier that prevents a nitrous oxide line being plugged into an oxygen outlet. Tecnomed manufactures the full probe programme to the three standards used across its outlet range – BS 5682:1992, DIN 13260 and AFNOR NF S 90-116 – so the same connection logic runs from the terminal unit to the equipment.

Probes are machined from brass and chrome plated for wear resistance at the sealing surfaces and for easy wipe-down cleaning. Each gas service carries its own labelling in addition to its index, and the AFNOR range adds the colour-coded collar that identifies the gas at a glance. The hose end is a barbed union sized for medical gas hose, and the angled body keeps the hose clear of the wall face so the probe is not levered sideways in the outlet – the usual cause of premature seal wear.

The catalogue covers O2, VAC, MA 4, MA 7 and N2O in each of the three standards, plus CO2, giving a matrix that matches any Tecnomed outlet. Flat output probes are available according to every standard for applications where a straight through-body is required, such as equipment panels and test rigs. Probes are ordered with flowmeters, vacuum regulators and gas valves, or separately as replacement items for maintenance stock.

Frequently asked questions

How do I identify which probe standard my outlets use?

Look at the outlet face. BS 5682 probes have a plain stepped nose, DIN 13260-2 probes have a collared body with a coloured ring, and AFNOR NF S 90-116 probes have a prominent colour-coded plastic collar. The outlet itself is usually marked with its standard as well. Send a photograph of an outlet and we will confirm the correct probe before you order.

Can a probe for one gas be forced into another gas outlet?

No. Each gas service has its own probe index, so the geometry physically prevents insertion into the wrong terminal unit. That mechanical keying, combined with the per-gas labelling and colour identification, is what makes cross-connection at the bedside effectively impossible. It is why replacement probes must always be ordered by gas as well as by standard.

What is a flat probe used for?

A flat probe has a straight through-body instead of the usual right-angled hose take-off. It is used where the connection must sit in line with the equipment, for example in device panels, test and calibration rigs, and some pendant assemblies. Flat output probes are available according to every standard in the range.

Do you supply probes already fitted to hoses?

Yes. Probes can be supplied loose as maintenance stock or assembled onto EN 739 colour-coded medical gas hose to the length and end fittings you specify, which removes on-site assembly and the risk of a mismatched pairing. Give the gas, standard, hose length and the far-end connection with your enquiry.
