Medical Gas Hose – EN 739 Colour Coded Hoses up to 10 bar

Tecnomed medical gas hoses are special thermoplastic hoses for medical gases, colour coded according to EN 739 and suitable for pressure up to 10 bar. Colours identify oxygen, nitrous oxide, medical air 4 bar and vacuum at a glance, and hoses are supplied to length with gas-specific probes and unions for bed heads, pendants and equipment.

Overview

A medical gas hose carries gas from a terminal unit probe to the device that uses it – a flowmeter, ventilator, anaesthesia machine or suction assembly – and inside pendants and bed head units between the pipeline connection and the outlet block. Tecnomed hoses are produced specifically for medical gas service rather than adapted from industrial pneumatic hose, and are rated for pressure up to 10 bar, comfortably above the 4 bar and 7 bar pipeline pressures they normally see in service.

The hose is made of thermoplastic material selected for flexibility at room temperature, resistance to kinking where the hose turns at the outlet face, and a smooth outer surface that wipes clean. Colour coding follows EN 739: the catalogue shows yellow for vacuum, blue for nitrous oxide, black for medical air 4 bar and white for oxygen, so a technician can trace any line by eye without opening a pendant or reading a label at close range.

Hoses are supplied cut to length and terminated to order, with a gas-specific probe at the outlet end and the union required by the equipment at the far end, so the assembly cannot be fitted to the wrong service. They are used in operating theatres, intensive care units, wards and equipment rooms, and are a standard part of Tecnomed pendant, bed head unit and wall module builds as well as being ordered separately as maintenance stock.

Frequently asked questions

What pressure are the hoses rated for?

They are suitable for pressure up to 10 bar. Hospital pipelines normally run at 4 bar for oxygen, nitrous oxide and medical air 4, and 7 bar for medical air 7, so the hose carries a substantial margin above its working duty. Always replace a hose that shows cuts, kinks or surface damage rather than relying on that margin.

How does the EN 739 colour coding work?

EN 739 assigns each medical gas its own hose colour so lines can be traced visually. In the Tecnomed range yellow indicates vacuum, blue nitrous oxide, black medical air 4 bar and white oxygen. Combined with a gas-specific probe at the terminal end, the colour code makes both identification and mis-connection prevention part of the hose itself.

Can hoses be supplied already fitted with probes?

Yes, and it is the recommended way to order. Specify the gas, the probe standard, the hose length and the connection required at the equipment end, and the assembly is built and tested at the factory. That removes site assembly and eliminates the risk of a correct hose being paired with the wrong probe.

How often should medical gas hoses be replaced?

Replacement intervals are set by the hospital's own maintenance policy and by the inspection regime under EN ISO 7396-1 and HTM 02-01. In practice, hoses are inspected at each planned maintenance visit and replaced on any sign of kinking, abrasion, hardening or damage to the termination. Keeping a small stock of assembled hoses per gas service avoids downtime.
