Area valve service units - also called zone valve boxes or zone gas control units - are the control point between the hospital medical gas pipeline and the clinical area it feeds. They display the pressure of every gas service in that zone and let staff shut the gas off at the boundary of the area in an emergency or for maintenance, without taking the rest of the hospital out of service. Tecnomed manufactures its TEC31 range in accordance with EN ISO 7396-1 and HTM 02-01.

The range covers three zone unit bodies - the Elegance unit with a printed plexiglass sliding cover, the Vexillum unit in galvanized steel with a lockable hinged cover, and a stainless steel version - each configurable for one to six gases including vacuum. Alongside them sit the Multi Alarm X medical gas alarm unit with LCD display and RS485/Modbus output, the double stage regulator panel and second stage regulator for reducing 8 bar line pressure to 4 bar at floor level, and the full range of oxygen-compatible medical gas ball valves from DN15 to DN65.

Tecnomed builds the whole medical gas chain in its own plant in Istanbul and exports to more than 45 countries, so zone units, alarms, regulators, valves, pipework and terminal units all come from one manufacturer. Units are produced to the project: gas count, flush or surface mounting, cover design and alarm configuration are set before manufacture, and support, spares and calibration come from the same source.

Frequently asked questions

What is an area valve service unit for?

It monitors the pressure of each medical gas serving a clinical area and provides a single point at which those gases can be shut off. In an emergency - a fire, a leak or a burst pipe in the area - staff open the cover and close the valves for that zone only. It is also how a ward or theatre is isolated for planned pipeline work.

How many gases should the zone unit cover?

Zone units are produced for one to six gases including vacuum. The usual services are oxygen, medical vacuum, medical air 4 bar, surgical air 7 bar, nitrous oxide and carbon dioxide. The count is driven by what is actually piped into that area, so an operating theatre zone is typically a five or six gas unit while a general ward may only need two or three.

Which unit should we choose - Elegance, Vexillum or Stainless?

All three do the same job to the same standards. The Elegance unit has a sliding printed plexiglass cover and a carbon steel frame and is chosen where appearance matters, the Vexillum unit has a lockable hinged cover on a galvanized steel body for corridors and technical areas, and the Stainless unit is made from stainless steel for operating theatre and clean area environments.

Can the alarm be connected to our building management system?

Yes. The Multi Alarm X transmits pressure values, current limit settings and alarms over an RS485/Modbus line to the automation system, in addition to the audible alarm and the local LCD display. It generates a high pressure and a low pressure alarm, both high priority, for each monitored gas.

Do you supply emergency connections on the zone units?

Emergency NIST connection is available as an optional feature on the Elegance zone service unit, and the double stage regulator panel is supplied with NIST or AFNOR emergency inlets so a cylinder can be connected to feed the area if the main supply fails.

Are the units flush mounted or surface mounted?

Tecnomed zone control units are designed as recessed, flush-mounted units as standard, and surface-mounted variants are available for both the Elegance and Vexillum bodies. Application can be made with either model; the choice is normally made from the wall construction and the depth available.
