Liquid Oxygen Converter Unit – 15 bar to 4-5 bar (TEC51.33)

The liquid oxygen converter unit is the last stage between a LOX tank and the hospital pipeline. After the evaporators, line pressure stands at 15 bar; this unit adjusts it into the 4-5 bar range before the gas enters the hospital. It carries oxygen compatible high flow regulators, a backup system and integration to the cylinder manifold.

Overview

Liquid oxygen coming from the liquid oxygen tank is converted into gas with the help of the evaporators, and the line pressure at the end of the evaporators is 15 bar. The liquid oxygen converter unit is the unit used for adjusting the pressure into the 4-5 bar range before entering the hospital at the last stage. Without it, the pipeline would see the full cryogenic system pressure, so the converter is what makes a LOX source compatible with ward-level equipment and terminal units.

The unit is built as a panel carrying oxygen compatible high flow regulators sized for the flow a large hospital draws, together with the isolating valves and gauges needed to operate and monitor it. A backup system doubles the regulating line so that one side can be isolated for service or a regulator fault without dropping the pipeline pressure, which is a requirement for any single-source installation feeding critical areas.

The converter unit integrates with the cylinder manifold system, so the LOX line and the reserve manifold can be brought together in one controlled changeover arrangement; on the Deluxe manifold the liquid tank can be selected as the third source in the alarm control unit. Tecnomed liquid oxygen conversion units are produced in accordance with HTM 02-01, MDD 93/42/EEC, EN ISO 7396-1 and ISO 13485 standards.

Frequently asked questions

Why is a converter unit needed after the evaporators?

The line pressure at the end of the evaporators is 15 bar, far above what hospital terminal units and equipment accept. The liquid oxygen converter unit adjusts that pressure into the 4-5 bar range before the gas enters the hospital, making it the last stage of the LOX source.

What happens if a regulator fails?

The unit includes a backup system, a second regulating line that can carry the flow while the first is isolated. That allows regulator service or fault replacement without interrupting oxygen supply to the wards.

Can it work together with a cylinder manifold?

Yes. Integration to the cylinder manifold system is a standard feature, and the Deluxe manifold alarm control unit can take the liquid tank as a third source. This is the usual way of providing the reserve source in an EN ISO 7396-1 installation.

Liquid Oxygen (LOX) Tanks

Liquid oxygen tanks are the highest-capacity oxygen source a hospital can install. Tecnomed LOX tanks are cryogenic double-vessel stock tanks certified by Turk Loydu, built to EN 13458-2 and the 2014/68/EU Pressure Equipment Directive, with standard volumes from 3 m³ to 30 m³ and matched evaporator and liquid converter capacities.

Ambient Air Evaporators (Vaporizers)

An ambient air evaporator is the component that turns liquid oxygen back into usable gas. Coupled with the LOX tank, it uses heat drawn from the surrounding air to vaporize the cryogenic liquid passing through it, and is built from 5000 or 6000 series aluminium finned pipes, aluminium pipes and aluminium box profiles suitable for cryogenic service.

Automatic Medical Gas Manifold Systems

The automatic medical gas manifold system is the cylinder-fed source of a hospital pipeline, supplying oxygen, nitrous oxide, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, medical air and mix gas. Two regulation stages drop cylinder pressure to a stable 4-5 bar line pressure, while duty and reserve banks change over automatically and a digital alarm unit reports line pressure and cylinder content.
